UW-Madison’s Andrew Winterstein is being awarded the 2017 Sayers “Bud” Miller Distinguished Educator Award from the National Athletic Trainers’ Association’s Executive Committee on Education.
This prestigious honor recognizes individuals who follow Miller’s example and exemplify excellence in the field of athletic training education. Award recipients excel in promoting athletic training education beyond the local level through service and publishing on athletic training issues.
Winterstein is a clinical professor with the School of Education’s Department of Kinesiology and is director of its Athletic Training Program.
Winterstein is distinguished as an incredible educator due to his passion for student and professional education. He embraces new technology in his teaching, focuses on interdisciplinary action, and stays at the forefront of current discussions and debates in the athletic training field. Winterstein’s methods and focuses help improve the quality of healthcare and prepare students for future careers by showing them how to think critically and creatively.”Dr. Winterstein is an extraordinary teacher and leader in the field of athletic training education,” says UW-Madison’s David Bell, an assistant professor with the Department of Kinesiology’s Athletic Training Program and the director of the Wisconsin Injury in Sport Laboratory (WISL). “He is a visionary thinker who is not afraid to share his thoughts with his students, colleagues, or fellow educators. He is also not afraid to challenge the profession about the role of athletic trainers in the context of the overall healthcare system.”
Winterstein will be formally presented with the award at the NATA Clinical Symposia in Houston during the Executive Committee for Education session being held on Tuesday, June 27.
